About NHS 111 Wales

The NHS 111 Wales service provides free access to urgent out-of-hours medical care, and round-the-clock health support and guidance.  Health advice and information can also be found on the NHS 111 Wales which includes a Symptom Checker for common complaints and conditions.

The easy-to-remember number is free to call from landlines and mobiles.

When should you call NHS 111 Wales

The Out-of-hours service operates when the surgery is closed. i.e.  from 18.30 p.m. to 08.00 a.m. during the week, throughout the weekend and during public holidays.

Call NHS 111 Wales if you need urgent medical attention or advice that cannot wait until the next working day.   For a serious or life-threatening emergency dial 999 immediately.

What happens when you call NHS 111 Wales

Your call will be answered by a specially trained call handler who will take your personal details and ask some questions about your problem.  It would be useful to have a list of your medication to hand, a note of allergies, and details of any serious illness that you have suffered with in the past.

Callers may receive health advice over the phone, or should further assessment be needed a clinician will call you back.   Callers will be fully assessed and if they need to be seen by a doctor or other healthcare professional an appointment will be arranged.

Call handlers are trained to recognise when there is a threat to life.  Anyone dialing 111 who really needs an ambulance will be put straight through to the emergency ambulance service.

A written record is made when you contact the out-of-hours service and this will be passed on to the surgery.

If the out-of-hours team suggest that you are followed up by your GP, please contact the surgery to arrange this.

What other options are available?

If you feel you may need to visit the Emergency Department or Minor Injuries Unit you can phone 111 where you will be assessed, and if you need to be seen this can be arranged. This will ensure you are seen in the right place, first time.
